Three of the Best at Forbidden Planet!

I feel like a bit of a fraud posting about this as other commitments meant that I only got to spend a few minutes there before having to dash off and be elsewhere. I was there though (albeit briefly) so this post does count!

Forbidden Planet have got a good thing going in terms of evenings where a bunch of authors get thrown at a bunch of fans to see what happens next. Thursday night was no exception with none other than China Mieville, Mark Charan Newton and Adam Nevill admirably performing their signing duties. If that wasn't enough, there were loads of old blogging friends that I hadn't seen in an age along with some new faces that I unfortunately never got to say hi to (maybe next time!) Such a mixture can only mean one thing... A good time was had by all :o)

I didn't get time to take any pictures but that's not actually not such a bad thing as Chloe from Pan MacMillan did a much better job than I ever would have done. I didn't think I was around for long enough to get in any of the pictures but if you find the picture of Amanda (I think) then you'll see my bearded face looking suitably awed at the prospect of meeting China Mieville. China was great to talk to although my budding theory that the London of 'King Rat' was also the London of 'Kraken' was a bit of a non-starter...

Thanks to all those people who let me jump in front of them to get my books signed so I could get away quickly. Recent events have meant that I'm about three weeks behind myself when coming up with decent excuses to jump the line. To set the record straight, my wife hasn't been pregnant for about three weeks now but there is a baby that I had to get home to...!

I was lucky enough to get quoted at the front and Mark was grateful on my behalf :o)

Forbidden Planet and Gollancz Publishing have gathered a host of science fiction and fantasy talent into one event – an event to bring writers and fans together and to promote interest in new and different kinds of fiction.

This is a free-form and open signing, bringing the authors out from behind their tables and giving their readers a chance to meet them and talk to them about their work. An array of fantastic books will be on hand to be picked up and signed – including works by every one of the writers present.

The last sentence made me chuckle. Will the Gollancz authors sign anything that's put in front of them...? Not sure that I can make this one but it looks like it could be a lot of fun...

One Signing, Five Authors...

When Gollancz set their authors loose in Forbidden Planet there’s only one way it can go down for this blogger. The reason this is being posted in the afternoon is because I’ve just recovered from a monstrous hangover (chicken and chips followed by a Snickers Ice Cream is a great hangover cure by the way) and am now able to look at my computer screen without wincing! It was worth it though, even though I know what the next Gollancz signing means for my poor head I will do it all over again...

Last night saw Justine Robson signing copies of her latest book, ‘Chasing the Dragon’, at Forbidden Planet. If Royal Mail had got its act together then I would have got my copy signed. As it was, I only picked it up this morning... Next time!
Gollancz don’t tend to do things by halves though and gave the public extra added David Devereux, Adam Roberts, Chris Wooding and Paul McAuley for their money (although it didn’t actually cost anything but you know what I mean... I’m still hungover!)

I’d really enjoyed ‘I am Scrooge’ so made sure that I got my copy signed by Adam Roberts, here’s the photographic evidence...



I didn’t get anything else signed, instead choosing to have a wander and take pictures when people weren’t looking :o) Apologies for the poor camera phone pics...



David Devereux decided to interview someone interviewing him interviewing someone interviewing him interviewing... (You get the idea). I got caught by the camera and have been threatened with an appearance on YouTube (it won’t be the first time!)



Chris Wooding talks an unsuspecting bystander into buying some of his books. (There were loads of them to choose from, how can someone so young looking have written so many books? Makes me wonder what I’ve been doing with my life...)



Justine Robson looks like she might be taking tips on how Paul McAuley holds court with nothing but a pile of books and a winning smile.

Not only were there authors all over the place but I also got to hang out with Saxon Bullock (who’s great), Liz from My Favourite Books and Gav from NextRead (goes without saying that he’s great too).
With the signing done, it was onto the Phoenix Bar for plenty of drinks and talking about books (I am not ashamed of the Brian Lumley book that was in my bag!) There was a lot of ‘falling off the wagon’ going on, you had to be there...

Another great night out and I’m hoping for another one very soon...

Alan Campbell - Signing and Q&A

I very much enjoyed Alan Campbell's 'Scar Night' and 'Iron Angel', 'God of Clocks' could very well be coming on holiday with me to either be read by the pool somewhere hot or read in a tent while the rain comes through the roof (our holidays are all about extremes!)

In the meantime, if you're in Edinburgh on the 23rd of July (and you're a fan of the Deepgate Codex!) then you might want to pop along to Waterstones West End, 128 Princes Street, where Alan will be reading from 'God of Clocks' and answering questions. You'll need a ticket though (which are free!) so either give the store a call on 01312 262666 or pop in and speak to a member of staff.

Patrick Rothfuss Book Signing at Forbidden Planet (Last Night)

I try to be pretty disciplined about the order that things get posted here but every so often something comes along that pretty much demands a place right at the front of the queue! Sometimes it’s a book that I’ve been waiting ages to read; sometimes it’s a book that I think people might like to hear about. Right now it’s a post all about Patrick Rothfuss’ pretty darn cool signing session at Forbidden Planet (and Q&A in the pub afterwards) last night. Was this the best book signing that I’ve been to? Quite possibly... Joe Abercrombie certainly has his work cut out if he is going to top it when he comes to town on the 5th of June ;o)

The last time I met an American fantasy author, with a huge beard, I was subjected to the full force of a GRRM scowl when I inadvertently made a comment about how long I’d been waiting for ‘Feast for Crows’. It was his fault for not phrasing his questions properly, not my fault at all! Nevertheless, I’ve got a bad record with bearded American fantasy authors and was resolved to be on my best behaviour this time round. I needn’t have worried, not only was Patrick bright eyed and bushy tailed (despite trekking across Europe) but he was also armed with a sense of humour and was fully intent on making sure that we enjoyed the signing as much as we did.
This is a guy who stopped the signing, a few books in, to tell us that he would write anything we wanted in our books but we had to tell him what we wanted first. If you know me then you’ll know that there was only question I could ask and only one answer that I’d want in my book. Here’s what Patrick wrote...



Patrick was also willing to pose for photos and insisted on full artistic control for that personal touch. I got ‘Serious Pat’ (thanks to Adam, of The Wertzone for taking the picture)...

After the signing finished a select band made their way to a top secret location where beer was drunk and Patrick answered questions thrown at him by an eager audience. These ranged from ‘Have you caught a pigeon yet?’ (he hasn’t but he’s still getting the urge to try) to ‘Are you a musician?’ (I thought he was, given Kvothe’s love of music, but apparently not; he loves it when people think he is a musician though...) with questions on world building and the art of writing as well. There were some really well considered questions being asked; so many, in fact, that I completely chickened out on asking mine. (‘Who would win in a fight between Kvothe and Harry Potter?’ Come on; don’t tell me you’ve never asked yourself this question!)

I had to leave just before Patrick read excerpts from ‘The Wise Man’s Fear’ but took the opportunity to grab what I think is a bit of a world exclusive. Whilst others may post pictures of the actual reading itself (and fair play to them), Graeme’s Fantasy Book Review can boast perhaps the only pictures of Patrick Rothfuss pretending to read from ‘The Wise Man’s Fear’ (and trying not to laugh at the same time)...

Last night’s China Mieville signing at Forbidden Planet...

The first thing that crossed my mind, when China Mieville came into Forbidden Planet, was that if publishers entered their authors into an arm wrestling tournament then China would wipe the floor with the opposition. This is one seriously hard looking guy! My second thought ran along the lines of how my brains turn to mush whenever I meet a favourite author but then China started talking and I took this welcome opportunity to ignore any further random thoughts, not before I took a picture of my official place number for the signing queue though! Ok, it was the number 14 on a post it note but (to be fair) I was reeling under the affects of ‘author awe’!



China is a really interesting guy who made an effort to answer all the questions asked in as much detail as possible. We would have probably stood there all day listening to him but he kept things reasonably short purely because the downstairs bit of Forbidden Planet can become a veritable sauna when it gets crowded...



The reading itself was the same one that went out on a recent podcast (can’t find the link to this, if anyone has it could they leave a comment please?) and outlines some of the initial investigations that take place around the murder that forms the basis for the plot. As luck would have it, I’d just finished reading that particular passage on the way into work, yesterday morning, but it was still an experience to hear the book being read by the author himself (especially as I’d found myself reading the book in a really dodgy Eastern European accent!)



I won’t go too much into the questions asked as I’m hoping to be able to give you guys a link to a video that was shot last night. The bits that caught my attention though were mention of a ‘Bas-Lag’ role playing game and China saying that he would love to write another ‘Bas-Lag’ novel but only if it didn’t undermine the ending of ‘The Iron Council’... He also spoke about a couple of manuscripts that he is putting the finishing touches too (one sci-fi, one urban fantasy in the style of ‘Perdido Street Station’)...

Richard Morgan Book Signing - Forbidden Planet (London)

For anyone in the area tomorrow, Richard Morgan will be signing copies of his new book ('Black Man') at the Forbidden Planet Megastore in London (6-7pm). If you haven't already got a copy of the book (or even if you have) this will be a great opportunity to get a copy signed by the man himself.

'The Children of Hurin' - Alan Lee Signing (Forbidden Planet, London)

Alan Lee (illustrator for 'The Children of Hurin' and most other Tolkien hardback books) will be signing copies of the latest addition to the Middle Earth series tonight at the Forbidden Planet Megastore in London (between 6-7pm). If you're a fan of Tolkien or Alan Lee (or both!) this will be a great chance to meet the man who has given thousands of readers a window into the lands of Middle Earth.
